Characteristic

Trier aspires to be the oldest city in Germany. In 16 B.C.E. as part of the romanization action in the area of ​​the Celto-Germanic tribe of Trewers [2], the Romans founded a settlement called Augusta Treverorum. The city was one of the administrative centers and "sub-capitals" of the Roman Empire, the residence city of Constantius I and his son Constantine the Great. Under Constantine the Great, the Roman Empire was divided into four prefectures - East (Constantinople), Illyricum (Sirmium), Italy (Milan) and Gaul (Trier).

From 273 AD, Trier was the seat of Catholic bishops. In the Middle Ages, the Archbishop of Trier was one of the princes of the Reich and electors of the Holy Roman Empire (ruling the independent Archbishopric of Trier).

St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, and Karl Marx was born.

In 1986, the Roman monuments of Trier, the Cathedral of St. Peter and the Church of the Virgin Mary, entered on the UNESCO cultural heritage list.
