Getting to Trinidad and Tobago
Relocation in Trinidad and Tobago
There are local flights between the two islands, and it takes about 25 minutes to get from one to the other. It costs just over $ 50 round trip and $ 25 one way. There are just over 20 flights a day, but if you have time for a connecting flight, you should not wait until the last minute as strikes or delays may occur.
Trinidad's public transport is managed PTSC[1] - "Public Transport Service Corporation". It costs just over 1 USD to get between the southern part of Trinidad (San Fernando) and the northern (Port-of-Spain).
Trinidad lacks a train network.
It is possible to rent a car directly when you arrive at Trinidad Airport. Renting a car in Trinidad for a week via Hertz costs between 300-700 USD, depending on size. There is left-hand traffic in Trinidad and Tobago. The speed limits are more of a recommendation than a law, so if you absolutely want to drive a car, you should stick to Tobago, as road safety is a little better there. Then is Sheppys Travel Service[2] to recommend, where prices start at 240 USD / week.
It is very cheap to get around by taxi, but if you want to get a ride to or from a specific place that is outside the regular route, it costs extra and you can then rent the entire taxi. Otherwise, there are special "taxi stands" where the different cars queue. If you travel via the taxi's regular route, the driver waits until the car has been filled before he leaves, but this is the cheapest option and the prices per person are about what the bus company charges.
If you want to cycle, Tobago is recommended, as it is the quieter of the two islands.
Due to the risk of crime, you should definitely not hitchhike.
Payment
Trinidad's currency is called "Trinidad and Tobago Dollar" and the price of a TT dollar fluctuates between 1-1.50 SEK. It is possible to pay with US dollars in the shops, but with a poor exchange rate.
