Turneffe Island - Turneffe Island

Located off the Central American coast, this atoll is about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide and about 30 kilometers from the coast. A large part of the atoll consists of mangroves and is not accessible.

background

getting there

The atoll can be visited with a day trip from Belize City, Ambergis Caye and Caye Caulker. Since the best dive sites are in the south of the atoll (e.g. The Elbow), but these are the furthest away from the starting points mentioned above, this part is very rarely visited by day-trippers.

accommodation

There are three hotels (lodges) on the atoll:

  • Turneffe Island Lodge, on Caye Bokel at the southern tip of the atoll.

The accommodations all border on a beautiful sandy beach protected by wooden breakwaters. It is possible to take a room in cheaper two-storey houses, or to rent a stand-alone house (cabanas). The excellent food is eaten by all guests in the dining house at the same time. As a rule, 3 dives per day are offered, most of which are no more than 10 minutes away from the island. Once a week (usually on Tuesday) the Lighthouse Reef is visited and dives are made at the Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye. The dive center is the only one on the atolls that offers Nitrox for diving.
