Tuscaloosa is a city in Alabama and headquarters of the University of Alabama
background
In 1954, segregation between white and black children in public schools in the United States was declared unconstitutional. As a result, African Americans tried again and again to enroll at the university. However, the applications were repeatedly rejected. In June 1963, the first African-Americans were allowed to enroll at the university. In the course of this it came to the "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door". The governor of Alabama state personally blocked entry to the university for the new students. Only on instructions from US President John F. Kennedy did he give way.
