Tuscumbia is a small town in Colbert County in northwestern Alabama. Located in the north of the city Sheffield and in the east Muscle Shoals. The three cities south of the Tennessee River form with the city north of the river Florence the metropolitan area The Shoals.

background

The first settlers settled here near a large spring in 1816, and town charter was granted as early as 1820. Tuscumbia is one of the oldest cities in Alabama. A jetty was built in 1824 and the railway line to Decatur was laid out from 1830 to 1834. As a result, the city developed into an important trading center in the region. In the American Civil War, these facilities were destroyed by Union troops and it takes a good 20 years for the city to recover because the ships on the Tennessee now docked in Florence. There is no significant industry in Tuscumbia. Efforts are being made to form a joint organization for development, culture, sport and tourism with the neighboring cities.
