Understand
A prestigious past
Uzerche is built on a rock in a meander of the Vézère. It seduced its first inhabitants from the Bronze Age by its strategic position which allowed the control of two important trade routes: the Precious Metals Route, which joined Armorica to the Mediterranean and the North-South Route.
Since the VIIe century, Uzerche asserts its defensive role with a first fortified enclosure. A century later, Pépin le Bref endowed the city with a 2nd fortification rampart and set up his headquarters here to counter the attacks of the Duke of Aquitaine.
At Xe century, foundation of a Benedictine abbey. Powerful and prosperous, it will experience its golden age in the 12th and 13th centuries, thus continuing to establish the influence of the city. Witness of this rich past, the Saint-Pierre abbey, an essential monument of Limousin Romanesque art and the crypt of the Holy Bodies unique in Limousin.
Fortified again at XIVe century by nine doors, Uzerche the impregnable will be called "Uzerche the Maid".
From 16 ° to XVIIIe century the development of the city continues. The establishment of a royal Senechaussee will elevate Uzerche to the rank of capital of Bas Limousin. It was during this period that the Limousin nobility had superb houses built with towers and turrets, thus offering the city an exceptional architectural heritage that will span the centuries.
From there will be born the saying: "Who has a house in Uzerche has a castle in Limousin".
From 19 ° to the beginning of 20 °, many craft activities linked to water are multiplying along the Vézère: card factories, flour mills, mills. The reputation of the tanners of Uzerche will then go beyond regional borders.
Today
The city of Uzerche counts 3,000 inhabitants, it is the capital of a community of 9 municipalities. Located near highways A20 and A89, Uzerche attracts new populations. To the south of the city, the industrial zone and the artisanal zone are in full expansion.
