Uzhhorod (Ukrainian Ужгород, Hungarian. Ungvár) - a town in the western part Ukraine, on the river Uzh, on the border with Slovakia.

Characteristic

Korzo - the main street

Settlement in this area dates back to the Younger Stone Age. They lived here, among others Celts, Avars, Dacians, Sarmatians, Burgundians, and in the 8th century a Slavic stronghold was established. The stronghold is associated with the Great Moravian and Ruthenian countries, and from the 10th century with Hungarian. In 1241-1242 there was a Mongol invasion here, but already in 1248 information about a "new castle" was recorded. Another heavy fortification, preserved to this day, was built in 1598, with improvements from the 17th century. From 1919, the city became part of Czechoslovakia, which was confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon (1920). In the period 1938-1944, it returned to Hungary for a short time.

On October 27, 1944 Uzhhorod was occupied by the Red Army. In 1991, the city became part of Ukraine.

The historic capital of Subcarpathian Ruthenia, now the capital of the Zakarpattia region. The name of the city translates as "the castle on the river Uzh".
