The baliem valley is located in the region Papua of the'Indonesia and its main locality is the town of Wamena.

Understand

The valley is renowned for the extraordinary culture of the tribes Dani who inhabit it.

It is important to know that in terms of tourism, only wealthy tourists went to this very remote area, which seems to have led to inflation in the prices of long hikes but also of most services linked to tourism. At the same time, the town of Wamena, the central base for visiting the valley, does not seem to benefit from this windfall: multiple open dumps, poor quality running water, random telecommunications network, power cuts, etc.

  • 1 Baliem Valley Cultural Festival (Budaya Lembah Baliem Festival) Logo indicating a link to the website, Logo indicating a telephone number  62 812-5994-9917, e-mail : Logo indicating timetables August 7 to 10, 2019. Logo indicating tariffs 150 000 IDR. – It is an annual cultural festival of ethnic dance of the different tribes of the valley and the surrounding area. If the festival brings together a large number of tribes and promotes exchanges, it nevertheless has a strong "spectacle for tourists" aspect where they photograph, sometimes excessively, the members of the tribes. The price of the entrance is for one day and the coffee is sold 60 kIDR (3.7 €). The first day consists of an opening ceremony in the morning with the officials then in the afternoon and the two following days see the welcome of the twenty tribes who perform performances of traditional scenes and dances. A carnival takes place on the last day in the town of Wamena. If you want to come during the festival, you can contact the organizers who will direct you to find accommodation, for example.
  • 2 Walk in the rice fields along the Baliem river, south of Wamena  – It is possible to make a loop through a first metal bridge, rice fields, a small "twisted" bridge and finally a suspension bridge before reaching the recycling center south of the airport. You can pick up a driver or find a motorbike to take you to the starting bridge marked on the map or even drop you a little further north after the bridge, at the end of the carriage road. During the walk, we pass between the rice fields and then we discover the specific method for cultivating taro and sweet potato: after setting the fire, we plant taro and sweet potato on small raised plots surrounded by ditches.
  • 3 Multi-Day Trek in South Baliem Valley  – Many of the treks start south of the village of Sogokmo and usually last anywhere from 5 to 12 days. A porter will cost you 250 000 IDR per day, a roof to sleep on 150 000 IDR by night. Good English speaking guides will ask you near 70  per day and per person, all inclusive. Watch out for scams! Some agencies may sell you so-called guides for more than 100  the day while they have limited hiking skills, knowledge of local culture, and practice of English. Be careful not to pay for the tour in advance and to test the staff on the first day.

Eat

Alcohol is prohibited for sale in Papua. There is little entertainment in the evening. There are, however, a few cafes (Honai cafe, Pilamo cafe) and a few restaurants, such as adjacent to the Maharani hotel, offer karaokes. nasi goreng will cost you around 35 000 IDR and one kopi hitam (classic Indonesian black coffee) approx 10 000 IDR.

  • 1 Habema Lake (Danau Habema) (West) – Entrance gate to Lorentz National Park from Wamena. We cross a checkpoint then take an asphalt road to Habema Lake where two unpaved roads, a 4x4 t necessary, allow you to bypass the lake from the north or the south. Watch out for nearby wetlands.
