Veliko Tarnovo (Велико Търново, also written Veliko Tarnovo in German), one of the country's former capitals, is located in the Veliko Tarnovo district (Oblast) on the Jantra River and is one of the most beautiful cities in Bulgaria.

background

Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the 2nd Bulgarian Empire between 1186 and 1393. During this time the city was a metropolis in which merchants, nobility and craftsmen lived and worked in three separate parts of the city. During the time when the Ottomans conquered Bulgaria (around 1393), Veliko Tarnovo withstood a siege by the Turks for three months, but was then almost completely destroyed. It was not until many centuries later that the city was completely rebuilt. Today Veliko Tarnovo is a city of artists and students. The old fortress, which was built on the foundations of Thracian and Roman settlements, is located on the Tsarevez hill. The fortress walls were up to 12 meters high and 3 meters thick. Today the outline has been rebuilt.

getting there
