Gondola ride - between 80 and 100 Euros.

By train/train

The best way to get to Venice is by train. There are two seasons, Saint Lucia, in the historic part of the city, and Teacher, on the mainland.

By bus/bus

By car

If you arrive at an airport outside Venice, spend a few days there and then continue your journey, it may be worth renting a car and staying on the island of Lido. It stands at the gate of the bay of Venice, towards the sea. It is the only one where you can go by car, via ferry. Use the GPS to go to Tronchetto and take the ferry to Lido. The crossing will already take your breath away with the view of the city, including St. Mark's Square.

The two ways to get around Venice are on foot and by vaporetto, kind of boat that serves as a bus. The best thing is to buy a ticket that is valid for a certain period, such as one or two days, with as many trips as you want.

There is no land transport (cars and buses) in the city. Although, the best way to get to know the city is to get lost in its numerous alleys and squares.

note: Venice is an island city and is subject to periodic flooding during high tides or during heavy rains, the so-called acque alte (high waters). Consult your travel agent or the city hall page to know the flood forecast, because in the central region of the city, the most affected, the tide can leave everything under water, seriously harming any movement and visits to monuments.

A typical mask of the city. Starting at 15 euros for a large.

All trade between the Rialto bridge and São Marcos square is much more expensive than on the other side of the bridge (the market).

Be sure to take the vaporetto and go to Murano. In addition to being a beautiful island, as much as the main one in Venice, there are the glassworks from which the most famous glass crafts in the world come out. In many of them it is possible to see the artisan making his works of art. Before taking pictures, check if it's allowed (usually are, but no flash).

Some typical Venetian dishes are:

  • Alla venetian fegato: chopped liver, cooked with chopped onions.
  • Sarde in saor: fried sardines, dipped in fried onions, raisins and pine nuts, spices and vinegar. Have to marinate at least one night.

Venice has some wonderful restaurants with Venetian cuisine. However, it is widely believed that restaurants in Venice serve quality food and in much smaller quantities than anywhere else in Italy. Specialties include polenta, made from cornmeal.

Near the Rialto Bridge, there is a row of restaurants with canalside tables, where you can experience the quintessential Venice of dining by the canal lights. Despite the waiters outside the restaurants inviting people in, they have a pretty acceptable quality for the price, which is almost always expensive anyway.

One of Venice's trademark foods is cuttlefish and its ink. This intense black ink serves as a sauce and ingredient for polenta (cornmeal), risotto (rice) and pasta. These dishes are usually indicated by the Italian words "nella seppia" (in cuttlefish), "alla seppia" (in cuttlefish style), or "nero di seppia" (black cuttlefish). For example, Polenta Nella Seppia is a cornmeal fried with the black ink of a cut fish. Despite the intensity of the color, the paint has a surprisingly mild taste.

Be careful when prices are by weight (typically by "etto", abbreviated "/hg" or 100 g). A dish can easily contain 400g of fish or meat (almost a pound) - reaching 4 times the stated base price! Restaurants may offer low prices for food on their menus that advertise outside the entrance, but sometimes make up for this by charging high drink prices (which is not usually advertised). Le Bauta, a restaurant in Fond del Gaffaro, is a good example. Also, make sure you retrieve your change after payment, it can sometimes be "forgotten" by the waiters.

For fresh fruit (including frozen coconut), check out the street market stalls. There is always a boat parked on the canal in the San Barnaba countryside selling fruits and vegetables in the late hours. To save money on lunch, eat standing up - that's what the Venetians do themselves.

All cafes, trattorias, osterias and enotecas are stocked at lunch with cicchetti, Venetian tapas, including tramezzini (triangular sandwiches on white bread), multi-cut bread rolls, polpette (fried balls of fish or meat plough) and various antipasti (inputs).

If you're self-employed, Rialto's food markets are an absolute must for fruits, vegetables and cheeses, but above all for the huge variety of seafood, much of it fresh from the lagoon and still moving! There are a variety of small shops around the city that sell fruits and vegetables, but tourists have a hard time finding them.

Head to the Dorsoduro area of Venice if you want to save a few euros. It's on the south side of town. It has the highest concentration of places where locals, especially students, go to eat. Generally, staying away from the main squares will be the cheapest option. If you are willing and able to walk around the city, some back streets offer the best food for the lowest price. Seeing the city from this vantage point is a lot of fun too!

Economic

search for the restaurant Leticia, in the alleys between Rialto and the back side of the market. There is an entrance on Calle del Sturion, but it is not the main one. The food is delicious, cheap by European standards and the owner speaks Portuguese, as he has lived in Brazil.

Don't risk arriving in Venice without a hotel reservation. From the simplest to the most expensive, the capacity is almost always full at any time of year. In case you end up arriving without having done the same, it is advisable to even try a hotel in the cities around Venice, like Olmo, Mestre, where you can find great hotels like Holiday Inn, Accor chain, etc, where it is almost always possible to find a room.
