Vesterbro is a central district of Copenhagen. This article also includes the adjacent neighborhoods of Sydhavnen, Enghave, Valby and Vanløse.

To know

Vesterbro is located west of Indre By, the center of Copenhagen. It owes its name to the fact that it was located just outside the western gate (Vesterport) which opened on the west side of the ancient walls. The area was once known as a proletarian district and also as the red light district of Copenhagen but today it has greatly re-evaluated while retaining a certain number of sexy shops in the Istedgade area, near Halmtorvet, guarded by the police. Vesterbro City Council legalized pornography in 1967 in a resolution that caused a stir at the time. With the subsequent sexual liberalization operated in other countries, Istedgade's sexy shops arouse less curiosity today.
