Victoria lies on the rocky Seychelles-Island of Mahé, which is described here with. Located in the northeast, it is the capital of the island state off the East African coast.
background
With just under 25,000 inhabitants, it is the smallest capital in Africa. Due to the mountainous hinterland, there is a shortage of housing. Overall, around 90 percent of Seychelleians live on Mahé. Victoria has hardly any sights, at most the "Sir - Selwyn Market" or the "Clock Tower", which the city got from its colonial power Great Britain at the beginning of the 20th century.
getting there
By plane
A taxi from the airport to the city, 11 km, costs at least 500 SR. There is a bus stop on the street. Unsurprisingly, a monorail planned by an Indian consortium from 2011 onwards did not materialize. Also in 2018 it is not yet clear how the urgently needed expansion of the airport, which cost US $ 400 million, will be financed, although talks have been held with investors mainly from Dubai for years. The airport company there will then lease a new building as the operator if necessary.
ZilAir offers helicopter flights to smaller islands with luxury hotels.
By boat
- Ferries
- Crusader
Cruise ships usually moor in the New Port at.
- Yachts
Sailors arriving in the Seychelles must register with the harbor master on VHF 16 (24 hours) two hours before arrival. As a rule, a place at the remote quarantine dock is then assigned. The fees are moderate. Here you should find out about restrictions on anchoring (few) and about national park fees. Anyone who stays with their boat for more than 30 days has to deal with customs before the deadline has expired. After completing the formalities in the port office, you can then go to the
drive.
Another mooring option is the 4 Eden Island Marina (☎ (248) 346 300), part of a luxury hotel. The preferred clientele are the nouveau riche from the Gulf States and Eastern Europe with "super yachts." There were reports of increased slumps for both investors in 2015.
Further south on the Ostküse are:
mobility
A shopping center is right next to the central one 6 Bus station (Timetables. Most buses run from 5.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., although not always frequently). In 2018, tickets cost 7 SR regardless of the route (with air-con 15 SR). Large luggage is not welcome. The “rag collector” before 8.30 p.m. costs extra.
Taxis are numerous, 25% night surcharge is common. The basic price in 2017 is 100 SR 10 RS / km.
Tourist Attractions
The sights are limited to buildings in the English colonial style of the late 19th century, as can be found in several places of the earlier Empire in the tropics. The central one is considered to be the top showpiece 3 Clock tower, modeled on a similar one in the London district of Vauxhall. With that the list is already exhausted, because the bust around the corner for Pierre Poivere or the fountain Fontaine Jubilee de Diamond with the best will in the world, you can't count on them, they are of village level. Anyone who wants can rely on the Bel Air Cemetery view overgrown tombstones from the 19th century.
- Museums
The Seychelles History Museum was moved from its location in the cultural center cum national library to the 5 former court of appeal / mayor's office relocated.
- Sacred buildings
- Eden Island
8 Eden Island is an artificial island laid out as a housing estate in the harbor basin, which is connected to the city by a bridge. There is a business center right in front of the transition. The island is dominated by a luxury resort with a marina.
