Vienna (Wien) is the capital and largest city in Austria.

Understand

The Austrian capital is, together with Paris, London and Pomegranate, one of the most sumptuous European capitals. It is a city rich in history and culture: it was the cradle of the home of the Habsburgs, one of the dynasties that dominated Europe during the second millennium and which had influences even in Brazil (the Empress Leopoldina). It is also the birthplace of the Classical Period of music and also of the waltz. In this city lived some of the most important classical composers in the history of music, such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler and the Strauss family. Once visiting the city of Vienna, it is possible to feel inside the fairy tale stories. Around every corner there is a charm; be it open-air concerts - either by soloists or orchestras or choirs - or carriages passing through the city's streets. Vienna is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting cities in Europe and around the world.

By train/train

The city of Vienna is endowed with a subway network consisting of five lines. It should be noted that the subway in Vienna does not have a turnstile, there is free passage between the mezzanine and the platform. However, a subway employee can collect the ticket in person on any train, incurring a fine for those who have not purchased and validated the ticket. Tickets are sold at automatic machines, with instructions in German, English, Italian and French, and can be valid for different periods. In addition, there are also light subway corridors spread throughout the city - a cable car made up of three cars, which runs on rails.

By bus/bus

There are many tours that can be done by tourist buses, with guides in several languages. These buses generally circulate through the most important tourist spots in the city. Most sights are located nearby, with the exception of the Schönbrunn Palace area.

It was the main residence of the Habsburgs throughout history. It has daily monitored visits, which pass through the social halls, dances, and the imperial apartments; however it is not allowed to photograph or film the inner areas of the palace.
  • Hofburg Palace: Though smaller, it's as sumptuous as Schönbrunn Palace. Located right in the heart of the city, the palace is known for being the place where Empress Sissi lived. Today, it is the residence of the President of Austria.
  • St. Stephen's Cathedral

Speak

The local language, as throughout Austria, is German. However, it is possible to communicate well using English and most of the population also speaks a language other than German and English - usually Italian, French or Spanish. It is difficult, however, to find someone who speaks Portuguese or even references in tourist places written in Portuguese.

Vienna offers a wide range of hotels. Prices are relatively higher than in neighboring countries, or in neighboring small towns, but generally the quality of hotels is better.

To the choose an accommodation it's important to know which part of the city you plan to spend the most time in. Many accommodations claim to be centrally located, which for the Viennese means being in or beside the 1st District, and few are. Many are even outside the central districts, 2-9. Still, all are within a 5-minute walk of a subway or a bus/tram stop; and you can get downtown in 20 minutes or less by public transport from anywhere in the city.A reminder about addresses and districts: The district number appears in front of the street name. Thus, 9. Badgasse 26 is Rua Badgasse, n. 26 in the 9th district.

Rooms for smokers are relatively common. Rooms for non smokers they are few, and hotels with non-smoking floors are not very common. Non-smoking people may be annoyed that public areas of the hotel (often your room's hallway) smell like cigarette smoke.
