background
As early as 1600 there was a Dutch branch at this point, which sailing ships called at irregularly. English castaways found refuge there in 1605. However, they were attacked by the Indians after a short time and many of them were killed in the process. In the decades that followed, all nations in this region went ashore as the bay was a good anchorage. The Dutch built a fort at Point Sables. In 1764 a large number of French came here from the island of MARTINIQUE. In 1775 there were already 61 plantations in the area. Vieux Fort became the island's capital and the center of sugar production. Outside the village you can find the ruins of a sugar factory from the 18th century. Until the end of World War I, this was the main growing area for sugar cane. In 1939 the island government sold 280 hectares of fallow land to farmers on BARBADOS. After the outbreak of World War II, the USA leased over 250 hectares of land in the Beanfield district to build a military base with an airfield. In addition to the airport, the Americans also built a new quay, the main roads were re-paved and a large, modern hospital was built just outside in the municipality of Augier. A tunnel was also created from Vieux Fort to this hospital as the shortest and safest connection. In 1971, with Canadian financial aid, today's airfield was built. 450,000 international air traffic passengers are handled there every year. For the Cricket World Cup in 2007, the airport was renovated and the airport building expanded.
In 1980 Hurricane Allen damaged a large part of the city.
On the night of September 8th to 9th, 2009 a wing of St. Jude's Hospital for inpatient treatment burned down completely. All 47 patients were evacuated and one patient died. The two side wings remained undamaged. There you will find the emergency room, X-ray, dental clinic, administration, pharmacy and the area for day patients.
Today Vieux Fort is the second largest city on the island after Castries.
The streets in the old center are laid out like a chessboard, six by seven streets. The approximately 750 m long Clarke Street is the main street of the town with many shops. It runs almost straight south from the St. Judes Highway to the new fishing port.
New Dock Road runs parallel to Clarke Street from St. Jude's Highway even further south to the container and freight port.
In the south at Cape Moule à Chique there is a lighthouse. From here you can see the island of SAINT VINCENT on a clear day.
The parishes belong to the administrative district of Vieux Fort Augier, Belle Vue, Black Bay, Grace, La Resource, Pierrot and St. Urban.
