Vlotho is a climatic health resort with almost 20,000 inhabitants in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia on the Weser.
background
Vlotho emerged around 1200 from a farming and fishing settlement called "Vlothowe", which was made up of the words "vlothe" (High German: "River") and "owe" (High German: "Aue"). The current spelling has been used since 1356. The city of Vlotho is located on the Weser and used to be an important transshipment point with a small railroad connection for cargo ships that delivered tropical timber, tobacco and bulk goods. There was also a skippers guild in Vlotho, the last two shipowners Kohlmeier and Simonsmeier with their cargo ships "Margret" and "Möwe II", which sailed until the 1980s. In addition, there were two inland shipping yards (Büsching and Rosemeier / Rasche) in Vlotho until the 1980s.

The one from the Northwest Railway operated RB 77 Weserbahn stops in Vlotho every hour in each direction (Bünde via Löhne and Hildesheim via Hameln).
The next train stations with IC stops are Bad Oeynhausen and Herford. There are direct connections from Berlin, the Ruhr area, Cologne and Amsterdam (only from Bad Oeynhausen). The next train station with an ICE stop is Herford.

In the street
Vlotho can be reached via the A2 from the direction of Hanover, the Ruhr area and Cologne via the Vlotho-West, Bad Oeynhausen and Porta Westfalica exits. Coming from the Netherlands and Osnabrück on the A30, do not take the A2, but continue straight towards Vlotho via the B 514.
