overview

Uluru is Australia's most recognizable natural icon. The world famous single sandstone mountain has a height of 348 meters, with a large number of its rocks lying below the ground. The Aborigines of Australia believe that the deities transformed into Uluru are from the tortoise deity. Kata Tjuta, which means 'many heads,' is a group of 36 stone arches dating back 500 million years. Both Uluru and Kata Tjuta have great cultural significance for the traditional Anangu landowners.

The development of tourist infrastructure adjacent to the foothills of Uluru started in the 1950s which soon created adverse environmental impacts. In the early 1970s, it was decided to remove all related tourist accommodation establishments and re-establish them outside the national park. In 1975, an observation station capable of observing 104 square kilometers of land beyond the northern boundary of the park, 15 kilometers from Uluru, was approved for the development of tourist infrastructures. and the airport, called Yulara. Campgrounds in the national park area were closed in 1983 and the last lodges closed in late 1984, coinciding with the opening of the Yulara resort.
