Greenland offers itself with its landscapes as a hiking area. Day hikes as well as extended hikes between ten and fourteen days are possible.
Long-distance hiking trails in Greenland
- Arctic Circle Trail - "Classic" hiking trail in western Greenland between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut
- Viking round - Two-part hiking trail in the south of Greenland between Narsarsuaq, Igaliku, Qaqortoq and Narsaq
- Royal road - hiking trail between Igaliku and Qaqortoq
- Shaft rail - hiking trail between Narsaq and Narsarsuaq
getting there
You must arrive via Denmark or Iceland. Air Greenland serves the route from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, Air Iceland wrong Reykjavík. Other boat transfers should be booked in advance. B. through a local operator, e.g. Tasermiut Expeditions or Blue Ice Explorer (both in Narsarsuaq).
Travel time
Travel time is all year round. In the summer months from June to September the paths are free of snow.
equipment
During the hike you are on your own. The basic equipment includes: Food, stove, tent and a suitable sleeping bag and sleeping mat.
In summer there are mosquitoes, mosquito repellent is necessary.
Parts of the hiking trails are swampy. Suitable footwear such as rubber boots are necessary for this.
Diesel must be carried along to operate the diesel stoves in the huts.
accommodation
In Kangerlussuaq, Nuuk, Kulussuk, Ammassalik, Qaqortoq, Narsarsuaq, Nanortalik and Sisimiut there are hotels. Along the Arctic Circle Trail there are huts with around ten beds. Sheep farms are also available for overnight stays.

The official Greenland Tourism Authority has issued topographical hiking maps for many hiking areas on a scale of 1: 100,000. In Germany, for example, this is available from the Arctic shipping.
Saga Maps has area-wide maps of the entire coastline of Greenland, but due to their scale of 1: 250,000 and coarser they are not suitable as the only navigation aid.
Topographic maps based on Open street maps There is no precompiled version for navigation devices, but with the right instructions, attractive topographical maps including elevation data can be generated for Garmin and other devices.
