Veliky Novgorod (Великий Новгород), until 1999 only Novgorod called, is a historic city in Russia, located about 170 km south of Saint Petersburg.

Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest cities in Russia. The first written mention of the fortified settlement Novgorod (German: the new city) took place in the year 859. This is considered to be the year the city was founded, although the scientific dispute is still in full swing. Above all, the location of the “old” city compared to Novgorod remains unclear. Most scientists assume that Ryurikowo Gorodishche, on the right bank of the Volkhov, two kilometers south of the current city center, was the "old" town. The Gorodishche was probably the seat of power of the IX. In the 19th century, the Warsaw prince Ryurik, who was called to Novgorod and is considered to be the founder of the Ryurikid dynasty.
The centuries-long history of Novgorod was extremely eventful. Here are just some of the milestones in the history of the Novgorod region: 859 - first mention in the Nestor Chronicle in connection with the trade route "from the Varangians to the Greeks".
862 - Ryurik is appointed Prince of Novgorod
1019 - Prince Yaroslav the Wise gives Novgorod independence from Kiev, Novgorod becomes a "free city"
1044 - the construction of the Novgorod Kremlin (Detinez`) begins under Prince Vladimir
1045 - Laying of the foundation stone for the stone Sophia Cathedral in the Novgorod Kremlin
1136 - Novgorod insists on his electoral rights and becomes a city republic ruled by the Veche
1242 - the battle on Lake Peipus is won by the Novgorodians led by Alexander Nevsky
1471 - Battle of Shelon; Defeat of the Novgorodians and loss of independence
1478 - the end of the Novgorod Republic
1570 - Novgorod is devastated by the troops of Ivan the Terrible

1997 - Novgorod receives the flag of honor of the Council of Europe for progressive economic and social development
1999 - The attribute "Velikij" ("Large (good)"), which has been omitted over the centuries, is added to the name Novgorod

River Volkhov has a length of 224 kilometers. The river and the Ilmensee are navigable from March to October. The hydropower plant is located near the city of Volkhov, 27 km from the estuary. The lock is 144.5 m long and 17 m wide.

- Sophia Cathedral. The oldest stone cathedral in Russia. It was built between 1045-1050. In the cathedral there is a national relic - the miraculous icon “The Mother of God of the Sign” of the XII. Century preserved.
- St. George's Monastery. One of the oldest monasteries of the Kievan Rus, probably founded in 1030. First written mention in 1119, when the construction of the associated St. George's Cathedral began (completed in 1130), is a World Heritage Site.
- Anthony Monastery. The monastery was founded in 1106 by the monk Antonius of Rome and existed without interruption until 1920. Today a museum, part of the world cultural heritage. The Katholikon (cathedral) of the Nativity of Our Lady is located on the site.
