Beautiful mountain scenery, rising rice paddies and easily accessible culture make the Minang Kabau highlands one of the popular destinations in Sumatra. The area has much to offer, including villages with craft workshops, a Reflesia Reserve, the beautiful Sianok Gorge and several fine examples of Minang culture. The highlands around Batusankar are the cultural center of the Minang people with Bukittinggi as a base. The Minang remain true to their Matriarchal (matrilineal) culture, one of the largest such communities in existence, and are also Muslim. The most striking part of their culture is the distinctive architecture of their houses, with grand roofs rising up on both sides (symbolizing the water buffalo's horns). You can also visit the volcanic lakes, high in the mountains or enjoy the beauty of the colorful dance performances. Pencak Silat demonstrations, the Ikat weaves, the silverware or one of the many cultural events. You can also take a trek to the Siberut Islands to experience the original Mentawai culture.
