Westphalia - Westfalen

Travel regions in NRW: The three north-eastern regions belong completely to Westphalia, the Ruhr area partially

Westphalia is the northeast of the two historic parts of the country that made up the country in 1946 North Rhine-Westphalia was formed (in 1947 the much smaller Land Lippe was added as a third component). Westphalia is less scenic, larger in area, but less populous than North Rhine. It consists of the following travel regions:

  • Münsterland, the northwestern part of Westphalia
  • Ostwestfalen-Lippe (with the exception of the Lippe part of the state), with NRW's share of the Weser Uplands
  • South Westphalia with Sauerland and Siegerland, Hellwegbörden and NRW part of the Rothaargebirge
  • northeastern part of the Ruhr area
