Vesuvius - volcano in the area Italian, on the Apennine Peninsula, on the Gulf of Naples. The rock of the effusive Vesuvius is aa lava, the old streams of which lie on the slopes of the volcano.

Vesuvius is classified as a stratovolcano. The beginnings of its activity date back to around 16,000. years. The years 1631–1872 were the most intensified period of the volcano's activity. According to recent measurements, its height is 1281 m above sea level, the depth of the crater - 230 m, diameter - 550–650 m. Today's cone is located in a caldera formed during the eruption of 79. The top of the caldera's northern rim is called Monte Somma.
