Story

The locality was the place of battle of witvlei during the First Herero-Nama War in March 1864. Maharero, with the help of the hunter Frederick Green (known among the Ovaherero by the nickname of Kerina), led a contingent of 1400 Ovaherero fromOtjimbingwe against the Afrikaner oorlams under the leadership of Jan Jonker Afrikaner. The Oorlam forces were defeated and fled.
