background
Wulai is the only native village in New Taipei. The Wulai area was a traditional hunting ground for the Atayal, the second largest indigenous people in Taiwan. In the Atayal language, Wulai means "boiling water" and refers to the many hot springs in the area. It is historically the birthplace of the Atayal, the place where a man and a woman were born from a broken stone. Even today real Atayal still live in the area and if you are lucky you will find a taxi driver with the impressive face tattoo of the Atayal.
In addition to the hot springs and the Atayal, Wulai is known for its waterfall.
