Urban centers

  • Atlantic City - Founded in the period of the gold rush, today it has only a handful of inhabitants.
  • Casper - The second largest city in Wyoming. Casper offers the largest concentration of museums and art galleries in the state, numerous entertainment groups, and easy access to nearby outdoor activities.
  • Chugwater - Diamond Ranch, located near Chugwater, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Douglas - Its old passenger rail depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Edgerton - City in Natrona County.
  • Fort Laramie - In 1860 Fort Laramie served as a station for the Pony Express.
  • Glendo - Near the state park of the same name located along the North Platte River.
  • Glenrock - The main naturalistic attractions in the area are the Laramie Mountains, the Medicine Bow National Forest, and the Platte River.
  • Guernsey - City in Platte County.
  • La Grange - Born as a refreshment point along the cattle path of Texas.
  • Lingle - City in Goshen County.
  • Lusk - Known for being the least populated county seat of the least populated state in the United States United States of America.
  • Midwest - Located in Natrona County.
  • Torrington - It takes its name from the hometown of its founder (i.e. Torrington in Connecticut).
  • Wheatland - Owns the largest privately owned irrigation system in the country.

What see

  • Fort Laramie National Historic Site (Fort Laramie). This historic site retains one of the most important sites in America regarding westward expansion and Indian resistance.
  • National Historic Trails Interpretive Center (Casper). Thousands of people traveled the Oregon, Mormon, California and Pony Express trails in the 1800s. Their stories are told through the center's interactive exhibits.
  • Fort Caspar Museum (Casper). The museum explores the history of central Wyoming, including the reconstruction of 1,865 military post located in a large river that runs through the various trails.
  • Fort Fetterman (Douglas). One of the few original border posts with existing buildings, at the crossroads of the Bozeman and the Oregon / Mormon trails. Opened in the period 1867-1882.
  • Nicolaysen Art Museum (Nic) (Casper). The Nicolaysen is one of the few Wyoming institutions focused on contemporary art, showcasing a wide range of work across multiple media. Along with other galleries in Casper, "the Nic" offers a respite from the constant "Old West" theme seen in galleries in the Rocky Mountains. Exhibitions of works by local, national and international artists. The Nicolaysen website offers details on exhibitions and opening hours.

Itineraries

  • California Trail - Follows the same path as Oregon and Mormon. The path can be seen for more than 1,000 miles from Casper to California.
  • Cherokee Trail - In 1849 and 1850, many Cherokee Indians left their reservation in Oklahoma to head west and seek your fortune in California's gold fields.
  • South Big Horn / Red Wall Scenic Backway - Vast grassland giving way to red sandstone plateaus on this dirt road 102 miles south of the Bighorn Mountains.
