Calico Ghost Town

An authentic part of America's Old West, Calico was one of the most important American cities from 1881 to 1896. Thousands came here to mine silver in the nearby mountains. When the price of silver fell in 1895, the silver mines closed and caliko died out. In 1954 the ghost town was bought by the owner of the Knott's Berry Farm restored. The desert traveler can enjoy lunch and a historical tour here, or a night on one Starlit Spend campsite. Calico is 17 km to the east Barstow near US 15th exit Ghost Town Rd. on I-15.Open: Monday-Sunday 9:00 am-5:00pm, closed on December 25th.Price: Admission: Adults $ 6.00, Children 6-15 $ 3.00. Train and carriage rides and mysterious barracks each $ 2.00 for adults and $ 1.00 for children, mine tour $ 1.00, shooting gallery $ 1.00 per round.
  • 2  Calico Early Man Archeological Site, Yermo, CA 92398. Tel.: 619-256-3591. It is the oldest archaeological site in North America. It goes back 200,000 years. It was opened more than a quarter of a century ago by the famous archaeologist Dr Louis Leakey, who unearthed more than 12,000 tools dating back to the Stone Age. These are the oldest artifacts which prove the existence of humans in the Western Hemisphere. The excavations were led by Professor Leaky for the first eight years. The site was named after him in memory of Ruth Dietta Simpson, who worked for him until he died and took over the management after his death.Open: 1st July to 30th September closed Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday 12: 00-16: 30, Thursday-Sunday 9: 00-13: 00; 1 October to 30 June closed Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday 12: 00-16: 30, Thursday-Sunday 9: 00-16: 30.Price: free entry.
