Zaltbommel is a city in the Rivierenland in the province Gelderland. The municipality of Zaltbommel includes the entire Bommelerwaard south of the Waal.

background

Zaltbommel was first mentioned in 850. In the 13th century, the city grew into an important trading town, received city rights in 1231 and 1316 ramparts were built, which can still be visited today. The famous Geldrian general Maarten van Rossum had a house built for himself in 1535 in Zaltbommel, which was strategically important for the Duchy of Gelre at the time, which is still standing and now houses the local museum. In 1572 Zaltbommel declared himself independent and in solidarity with the Geusen. Thereupon the Spaniards besieged in the following years unsuccessfully. From 1574, the city's fortifications were further expanded. Even before these were expanded, Spanish troops besieged the city again in 1599, but this siege was also successfully repulsed by the Dutch troops.

The following centuries were much quieter for the town. With industrialization, some businesses came to the city that brought a little life again. And a famous family of entrepreneurs comes from the city: the brothers Gerard and Anton Philips founded their light bulb factory in Eindhoven in 1891 in an empty factory building. A cousin of the two Philips brothers, Karl Marx from Trier, wrote, among other things, on his main work "Das Kapital" in Zaltbommel.

Otherwise, the industrialization of the city brought a railway line with a train station and the first bridge over the Waal. In 1933 a second bridge followed for the rest of the traffic. Up until the 1990s, this bridge ensured that the city was regularly mentioned in traffic reports. That ended in 1996 with the opening of the new Martinus-Nijhoff Bridge.

Originally the city was called Bommel and is still called that by its residents today.

Today's Dutch Reformed Church is a large and richly decorated church. The choir pews from 1450 are splendidly decorated and the tower (281 steps; 68.5 m high) is almost covered by sculptures. Typical for the Gates van Bommel is the missing spire, which burned down in 1696. • Mikveh, Minnebroederstraat 2. There is no synagogue in Zaltbommel. It probably existed as well as a Jewish community. A Jewish community had existed in the city since 1679. In 1804, when around 100 Jews lived in Zaltbommel and the surrounding area, the synagogue in Kloosterstraat was inaugurated. This included a ritual bath (mikveh) and a school. The community grew and a new synagogue was built in the same place 50 years later. In the 20th century the number of Jewish residents of the city decreased, in 1941 the Jewish community had 82 members. The great catastrophe took place in 1942 and 1943. Most of the Jews from Zaltbommel and the surrounding area were deported and murdered. After the war there was no longer a Jewish community in Zaltbommel. The synagogue fell into disrepair, the interior was housed in the synagogue of ’s-Hertogenbosch. When some new houses were built here in 1994, the mikveh was discovered by chance. The bathing house has been restored and is now used as a place of remembrance. There is a small exhibition and information about the once thriving Jewish life is available.Open: May - September Sun 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., on Open Monument Day also Sat.

Palaces, castles, fortresses

  • Stadswallen. Few cities in the Netherlands are still surrounded by such a well-preserved belt of fortifications as Zaltbommel. The seven bastions, which were built around 1600, are still clearly visible. A very nice, almost 2 km long footpath runs over the ramparts. The trees often reveal a view of the city. On the other hand, only a remnant of the old city wall remains on the Agnietenstraat. The Waterpoort (Water Gate) from the 14th century is the only preserved city gate. It leads out of the city to the Waal.

Buildings

  • Groot Bommelsch Gasthuis, Kerkstraat. The original hospital probably dates from the 2nd quarter of the 16th century. and was in the last quarter of the 19th Jhs. rebuilt. The main entrance is framed with magnificent columns and a so-called main frame. The buildings have had various functions over the years: brewery, stables for the garrison, school and later a hospital ward. During a renovation from 1999 to 2001, apartments were set up as well as a polyclinic for the Den Bosch Medical Center. To the Groot Bommelsch Gasthuis belongs to the Gasthuiskapel, the former hospital chapel from the 18th century. Today it is used as a concert hall for classical music.
