Zarqa is a city in Jordan

background

The spellings are varied: al-Zarqa, ez Zarqa, Zerga, Zarqa ', ez-Zer'a, but mostly az-Zarqa. The blue city is the second largest city in Jordan and at the same time the capital of the province of the same name. Over 1 million people live in this metropolitan area. The majority of them are refugees who came from the West Bank after the Six Day War.

About half of the Jordanian industry is located here. One reason is the phosphate mines near the city. So it is not surprising that Zarqa has to endure the greatest environmental pollution in Jordan, and there is also a desert-like climate that does not make life any easier.

getting there

The city is just 25 km east of Amman.

Tourist Attractions

The fortress Qasr Shebib probably stands in the place of a Roman fort. Apart from this simple structure, Zarqa is of little tourist interest.
