The one in north-south direction central part of the Drakensberg is towards the west by the Escarpment in the area between Cathedral Peak (3,004 m) and Giant's Castle (3,314 m) and extends to the east approximately as far as the N3 motorway.

background
All cities in the area are in the eastern, flatter part. For trips into the mountains, this is the last opportunity to buy supplies that go beyond a minimum basic supply. The shops in the nature park camps have only a very limited range, if at all, and are relatively expensive.
In the central part of the Drakensberg there are 5 visitor camps (from north to south):
- Didima Camp below Cathedral Peak, therefore often referred to as Cathedral Peak Camp. Affiliated is the Cathedral Peak Hotel. The camp is lavishly furnished and offers a variety of rooms for overnight guests. Own bar, large foyer, conference rooms, shop with souvenirs and important groceries. Campsite a bit out of the way.
- Monk's Cowl - Smaller camp, souvenirs, but only a very small selection of food, camping, widely distributed chalets. Nearby hotel.
- Injasuti
- Giant's Castle
- High moor

Hikes usually begin and end at one of the five camps.
The so-called Contour Path crosses the central and southern Drakensberg in a north-south direction and tries to stay at a constant altitude between 1800 m and 2200 m as possible. In the area of the Central Drakensberg, the section from Didima Camp to Monk's Cowl Camp is particularly recommended because of its magnificent views. The crossing from northwest to southeast is preferable because of the more beautiful light (sun comes from the north). There are 2 days, or 3 days at a more leisurely pace. Beware of the so-called Nek, the first pass from Didima Camp. The sign there is downright misleading! Leave the driveway here. Detours to caves with San paintings are possible.
