Nikolaas van Kets was the first lord of the lordship of Zwijndrecht and Burcht. The castle called 'Craeyenhof' was demolished in 1947. Jacomo Antonio Carenna divided the manor between his two sons in 1667 and only since the merger of the municipalities in 1977 are Zwijndrecht and Burcht together again. The municipality belongs to the province of Antwerp and has gradually turned into a suburban area of Antwerp, but there are still many idyllic places to be found.
The parish of Burcht was founded approximately in 659. Due to war violence and looting, there are no historical buildings to be found. In the 19th century, Burcht became the first industrialized municipality of Linker Oever.
Geographically, Zwijndrecht belongs to the Land van Waas, but in ecclesiastical terms it depended on the diocese of Ghent. The petrochemical industry has been established on the territory for several years.
Arrive
- Zwijndrecht can easily be reached with tram 3. The tram runs from the terminus in Melsele untill Merksem. But various buses that leave from Frederik Van Eedenplein (Antwerp Left Bank) also arrive in Zwijndrecht and Burcht.

- In castle bus 93 to 99. Burcht is located on the Scheldt, Zwijndrecht is more inland.

To look at
- Parts of the H. Kruiskerk in Zwijndrecht, where various cycling routes start, date from the 12th century. The St Martinuskerk in Burcht was demolished at the end of the 19th century, except for the Gothic choir. A neo-Gothic brick church was built on the same site between 1889 and 1904.

- The city council regularly places an image of a Belgian artist in the streets to confront the inhabitants with contemporary art. An art folder is for sale at the reception of the administrative center. Various works by the painter Fred Bervoets, who was born in Burcht, can also be seen in the Administrative Center.
