THE'René-Levasseur Island is the second largest island in Quebec to Canada. It is nicknamed “The Eye of Quebec”.
Understand
With 2 020 km2, René-Levasseur Island is the second largest island in Quebec after'Anticosti. It was created artificially by the rising water levels caused by the construction of the Daniel-Johnson Dam in 1970. Its characteristic shape is due to an impact from a meteorite, the fourth strongest impact the planet has known, which formed a crater 100 km in diameter with its center rising to form the island.
The island has two protected areas: the Louis-Babel ecological reserve and the Meteorite biodiversity reserve.
The island owes its name to René Levasseur, a chief engineer for Hydro Quebec during the construction of the Daniel-Johnson dam.
