getting there

By plane

  • The nearest major airport, Nantes Atlantique (NTE), is about 70-85 km from the Île de Noirmoutier, depending on the location. There are regular flight connections within France and abroad. In Germany there are flights to Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Munich, among others. Information is available on the website of the Nantes Atlantique Airport.
  • The shuttle bus service runs between the airport and downtown Nantes Navette Aéroport every 20 minutes, every 30 minutes on Sundays, daily from early morning to late evening. A ticket for this costs € 9 (as of 2019).

By train

  • From Germany, rail connections take the TGV, ICE or Thalys to Paris, where you change trains in the direction of Nantes. In Paris, you have to switch between different train stations with the Métro.
  • TGV trains to Nantes leave almost every hour from Paris Gare Montparnasse station. The journey time is just over two hours. From Nantes there are bus connections to the Île de Noirmoutier.

By bus

  • The main bus connection to the Île de Noirmoutier is the TER bus line 13 of the state-owned SNCF. It runs around 3 times a day in each direction between Nantes and the Île de Noirmoutier via Bourgneuf-en-Retz and La Barre-de-Monts, and takes around one and a half hours for the route. The timetable is based on the regional TER website retrievable. During the French summer holidays, this bus line runs much more frequently, a bus commutes to and from Nantes to the new regional bus station south of the local train station almost every hour. These buses are designed for connections to TGV trains. The total travel time between Paris Gare Montparnasse and Île de Noirmoutier is barely more than four hours. Modern, air-conditioned buses with WiFi on board are used on the TER bus routes. Continuous train tickets can usually be purchased for the TER bus lines, and the travel times can even be called up in the Deutsche Bahn Navigator app. The buses stop on the Île de Noirmoutier at three stops, on the one hand at the bus station in Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, as well as in La Guérinière and in Barbâtre.
  • The regional provider of bus services in the Vendée Sovetours also operates a bus route to the Île de Noirmoutier. The bus route 571 connects La Roche-sur-Yon and Challans with the Île de Noirmoutier. The total travel time of the line is up to two and a half hours. The timetable, however, is quite poor. During the French summer holidays, the line runs 3 times a day on the entire route. Outside of the holidays there is only one connection Monday-Saturday, with a departure from the island in the morning and a return from La Roche-sur-Yon in the early evening.
  • There are no long-distance bus connections directly from the Île de Noirmoutier. However, the provider's buses run from Nantes Flixbus e.g. several times a day to Paris (travel time 5-6 hours), Rennes or Bordeaux. Also the French provider Ouibus offers daily trips to, among others, Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse and many other cities. The buses of both providers depart in the north-east of Nantes near the Haluchère-Batignolles tram stop, in front of the local hospital.

By car

  • The most suitable connections from Germany are via the motorways via Paris. From southern Germany (Karlsruhe) it is around 1,000 km to the Île de Noirmoutier, from western Germany (Cologne) it is around 950 km. From the southern ring road of Paris it is approx. 450 km away. The easiest way is to drive from Paris on the A11 to Nantes, and then either continue along the Loire Valley to just before St. Nazaire. Here you turn off and follow the road signs to Île de Noirmoutier. Or you drive from Nantes on various main roads south of the city, which is around 40 km shorter.
  • The bridge that takes visitors to the island is toll-free. The highways in France, however, are not.

By bicycle

  • The runs through Fromentine and along the Atlantic coast of France Vélodyssée, Part of the EuroVelo 1 cycle path. The road bridge from Fromentine to the Île de Noirmoutier has a cycle path that is structurally separated from the tramway.

By boat

mobility

  • The entire island is easy to explore by bike.
  • Bus traffic is quite limited outside of the French summer holidays. The TER bus line 13 serves the three stops in Noirmoutier-en-l'Île (bus station), as well as in La Guérinière and Barbâtre (both on the outskirts of the town on the bypass).
  • The provider's regional bus route 571 Sovetours has about 30 stops on the Île de Noirmoutier. During the French summer holidays, the line is marketed as "Le Bus de l'île" and then travels up to 8 times a day in each direction between almost all locations. Outside of the holidays, however, there is only one connection Monday-Saturday and one additional connection on two days of the week.
  • A practical offer during the French summer holidays is the free bus, which offers free rides on the four lines A, B, C and D from the bus station in Noirmoutier-en-l'Île to places in the north of the island. These routes are served every 1-2 hours, one line even runs every half hour. Information and timetables can be found on the Website the Île de Noirmoutier.
  • You should leave your car behind after your journey, if possible, and move around either by bike or, during the summer holidays, with the buses, some of which are free of charge. Information on parking spaces, some of which are chargeable, can also be found on the Website the Île de Noirmoutier.
  • If you want to rent a car on site, there are several car rental companies on the island. Taxi rides from several providers are also possible on the Île de Noirmoutier. Information is also available on the Website the Île de Noirmoutier.

Due to the scarcity of water on the island, the drinking water comes from huge water towers and takes getting used to.

climate

The combination of sea aerosol, temperature, wind and UV radiation creates a healthy, stimulating climate. Diseases such as asthma and bronchitis, but also rheumatism as well as acne, eczema and psoriasis can be alleviated under these conditions. For vacationers, we recommend extensive walks along the edge of the flood, among other things. From a climatic point of view, the colder season is an ideal time to travel.

2100 - 2200 hours of sunshine a year guarantee a relaxing beach holiday.

Practical advice

In every place on the island there is at least one public toilet, which is usually free of charge.
