Staten Island (Richmond County, New York State: population 481,613) is a county in New York City, is the largest suburb of the five counties. Staten Island is connected to Brooklyn by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and to Manhattan by the free Staten Island Ferry. The Staten Island Ferry is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City because it offers easy views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Lower Manhattan from under the ferry. The 25 km² Greenbelt in central Staten Island has about 56.3 km of walking trails. This is one of the primeval forests of the city. Designated in 1984 to protect the island's natural land, Greenbelt has seven city parks. The FDR Boardwalk (FDR Boardwalk) is located along the south bank, 4 km long, is the fourth longest boardwalk in the world.

Staten Island is located in the southwestern part of the city. Separated Staten Island from New Jersey are the Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull Straits; To the east, New York Bay separates the island from the rest of New York. With a population of 487,407, Staten Island is the least populated of the five counties but the third largest by area (153 km2).
Staten Island County shares a border with Richmond County, the southernmost county in New York state. Prior to 1975, the county was officially known as Richmond County. Staten Island is sometimes referred to as the "forgotten county" by residents because they have a feeling that the New York City government has been indifferent to the county.
Staten Island is generally the most suburban of New York City's five boroughs. The north coast, especially the neighborhoods of St. George, Tompkinsville, Park Hill, and Stapleton, are the island's largest urban areas. This includes the historic district officially designated the St. George and the Historic District of St. Paul's Avenue-Stapleton Heights. There are many large houses built in the style of Victorian architecture. The south coast has more suburban neighborhoods and is home to a 2.5 mile long paved road. This is the fourth longest paved road in the world. Historically, the central and southern areas of the island were formerly specialized in poultry farming and the cows that supplied the city's milk. However, agriculture here almost disappeared into the 20th century.
The county is connected to Brooklyn by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and three Goethals, Outerbridge Crossing, and Bayonne bridges connect the island to the towns of New Jersey. Public transportation on Staten Island includes buses and a Metropolitan Transportation Authority express rail line, the Staten Island Railroad departing from the ferry terminal on George Street to Tottenville. The Staten Island Ferry (free) connects the island to Manhattan and is a tourist attraction in addition to being a means of transport, as the ferry crossing the bay offers views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the cape. Manhattan's southernmost tip is dotted with skyscrapers.
