THE Saint Nicholas is the capital of the prefecture of Lassithi with 12,638 inhabitants and is located on the northern coastline of Of Crete.
At a glance
Unlike the other cities of Crete, Agios Nikolaos was created recently, in the second half of the 19th century and became the capital of the prefecture of Lassithi in 1904. In the area there was an ancient and Venetian settlement. The picturesque location of the city, due to Lake Voulismeni, turned it into a popular tourist destination after the 1950s. Near Agios Nikolaos is the Spinalonga and the Elounda, also popular tourist destinations. It is about 70 km from Heraklion.

Distances within the city can be covered on foot.
What to see
- Lake Voulismeni, which is connected by a canal to the sea. On the promenade that surrounds the lake (with the exception of the steep west side), there are many taverns.
- The Archaeological Museum.
- The Byzantine churches of Panagia tis Vrefotrofos, near the city center, and Agios Nikolaos, on a small peninsula two kilometers north, inside the hotel premises. It dates from the 9th century and ask for the key from the hotel to see inside the iconic decoration of the 9th century BC. and 14th century hagiographies.
- Near the port, part of Ancient Latos to Kamara has been discovered.
