History

The village in Byzantine times was known as Valtochori or Vatrachochori. In 1204 the area became the possession of the Franks. The Frankish rule lasted from 1204 to 1430. The oldest mention of the village with the name Bartholomew is a patriarchal sigil of 1200 located in the monastery of Vlacherna, in the area of ​​Kyllini. In 1825, during the Revolution of 1821, the Battle of Bartholomew was fought near Bartholomew. The battle took place between 9 and 11 November 1825 and was an attempt to stop the march of Ibrahim Pasha to Messolonghi. The battle ended with heavy losses for the Turks, with about 1,000 dead, all but one of the Greeks died in battle. The first anniversary of the Battle of Bartholomew was celebrated in 2001.
