Goumenissa

Goumenissa was conquered by the Ottomans in 1387. During the Ottoman Empire it was, with a sultan's firman, a self-governing city with privileges, that is, Mukata, because its inhabitants were obliged to create fabrics from which the Ottoman army uniforms were made. . It thus experienced great prosperity and prosperity especially during the 19th century as a commercial, handicraft, agricultural and religious center of the region. Wine production made it famous beyond the borders of the Ottoman Empire, especially in Central Europe.

After the revolution of the Neo-Turks in 1908 and the non-fulfillment of their promises, many residents of Goumenissa and its province, in order not to enlist in the Turkish army, emigrated mainly to North America.

On October 23, 1912, during the First Balkan War, it was liberated by the Greek Army and with it the whole province that later took its ancient name, Paeonia.

During World War I, at the end of 1915, Franco-British troops advanced into the Paeonia area. The French established their headquarters on the Macedonian Front in Goumenissa.
