Sunset in the Caribbean

The Caribbean islands the West Indies is an extensive archipelago at the western tip of the Atlantic Ocean, between North and South America. The islands are known as a destination for honeymooners and retirees. Recently, however, moves towards ecotourism and backpacking have begun to open up the Caribbean to more independently travel. With good weather on an annual basis (with occasional but sometimes severe exceptions during hurricane season in late summer and early autumn), with airlines promoting Europe and North America and hundreds of islands to explore, the Caribbean offers something for almost everyone.

Countries and territories

Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, often grouped as Greater Antilles, are by far the largest islands in the area and the most visited by travelers. The Caribbean also includes the Lucayan Archipelago to the north, which includes the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the smaller Antilles, a group of much smaller islands to the east.
