Plastira Lake is a lake located on the plateau of Nevropolis in regional unit of Karditsa. It is an artificial lake and its official name is Lake Tavropou.
Generally
It was formed in 1959 with the completion of the dam at its southern end on the beginning of the river Tavropos or Megdova, and the idea for its construction was attributed to the military and civilian Nikolaos Plastiras, when in 1935 he visited his birthplace, and catastrophic floods occurred in the region and Macedonia from continuous rainfall, seeing the area is said to have said that "here one day it will become a lake", hence its most famous name. It was financed by money owed by Italy to Greece (war reparations ) and the construction was undertaken by a French company. Today the management of the dam has been undertaken by PPC. Before the construction of the lake, there was the so-called Neraida airport on the plateau, which was created during the occupation by the British, where the first allied plane landed in occupied Greece (August 1943).
It contains 400 million cubic meters of water, has a maximum length of 12 km, maximum width 4 km, its total area is 24 km2, while its maximum depth is around 60 m and its maximum altitude is 750 m. Its water is used for irrigation and electricity generation, as nearby, in the village of Mitropoli, there is a hydroelectric plant with a power of 129.9 MWatt, which was put into operation on October 10, 1962. In recent years the lake has been used for tourism, with several activities on and around the lake.
