H Limassol is its second largest city Of Cyprus and its southernmost Of Europe.
At a glance
Its population amounts to 100,952 inhabitants within the municipal limits and to approximately 180,000 in the wider urban area. Known among the cities of Cyprus for its rich nightlife and cultural tradition, Limassol is also the largest port on the island and one of the largest in the Eastern Mediterranean. It has experienced rapid growth, especially after 1974, when due to the Turkish invasion the other important port of Cyprus, Famagusta, was lost.
Limassol is a relatively younger city, although traces have been found in its area that testify that it has been inhabited since ancient times. It is located in the southern part of Cyprus, built amphitheatrically on the Gulf of Akrotiri, between two ancient cities: Amathus in the east and Kourion in the west. The development of the city is stopped by the British Military Bases to the west, so the city spreads to the east, with sandy beaches along its coastal front.
