Located on the west coast of USA., in its state California. It has a population of 3.85 million according to 2006 estimates and an area of 1,214.9 square kilometers. The vast metropolitan area of Los Angeles is estimated to have a population of about 13 million, called Angelenos. The city is one of the most cosmopolitan places in the world, as it is inhabited by people from all over the world, who are attracted by the pleasant climate, the intense and energetic lifestyle but also the promise of the American dream.

A total of six commercial airports serve the area and there are several more used by small private jets. The largest is Los Angeles International Airport (often referred to as LAX, which is IATA code). With 60 million annual passenger traffic, it is one of the busiest in the world.

Los Angeles has two ports with very high freight and passenger traffic, the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro Bay and the neighboring Port of Long Beach. The complex of the two ports has the highest traffic of any other port on USA.

The Los Angeles metropolitan area is covered by an extensive network of highways. There is public transport, such as the metro, light rail and buses, but the most popular means of transportation is the private car. Los Angeles has the biggest congestion problem of all USA.

The city of Los Angeles has three public and several private universities. The most important are the University of California, Los Angeles (University of California, Los Angeles or UCLA for short) and the University of Southern California (University of Southern California or USC). Many more are located in the greater metropolitan area, most notably the California Institute of Technology (California Institute of Technology, abbreviated Caltech).
