Being the port of Argalasti, and the only port on the side of South Pelion, it was a frequent destination for merchant ships, especially during the Venetian era. The Venetians were very impressed by the place for its diverse vegetation and beauty, which led them to refer to the village as "Hortus" which in Latin means garden / paradise.
