O Plakias is its town Of Crete
At a glance
The area has been inhabited since antiquity. Objects from Roman times have been found in Plakia, while in the place of Zoodochos Pigi a necropolis of 5 acres was found, but the slabs have been removed from the tombs. Scattered slabs have been found on the slope.
The settlement is new. It was created at the end of the 19th century or at the beginning of the 20th century by fishermen from Sellia, Rethymno who settled in the area. His first reference is to the Greek census of 1961, when he was in the community of Sellia and had 6 inhabitants. In the 1960s Plakias beach was a popular destination for hippies. In the 1970s, Plakias experienced a very large tourist development. Plakias today are available hotels, cafes, taverns, rooms to let, shop, organized beaches and post office. At the same time, it is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts.
