The Sofas is its settlement Karditsa. The town has a real population of 6,045 inhabitants.
Generally
Sofades is 286 km away from Athena and 215 km from Thessaloniki. They are connected to Karditsa but also with Athens by highway but also by train. Apart from transport, Sofades is also a commercial crossroads, since the largest quantities of cotton in Greece pass through there.
The name of the city is considered to come from the "sofades", ie small concrete canapes that the inhabitants built to rest mainly in summer. This name dates back to the middle of the 15th century, while it is also written in Turkish documents, probably by the tsiflikades of the area.
Sofades almost disappeared during the catastrophic earthquake of 1954 as the inhabitants were forced to build completely new houses.
The "Karagouniko Traditional Village", an effort of the Sofadites in Athens, is expected to create a special developmental and tourist interest, for the development of the area. This is a complete tourist unit that will take the form of a small Karagouniko village.
