The Spout, Red Water, Gossip are areas of Prefecture of Larissa. They are coastal settlements in the prefecture of Larissa. Stomio is a tourist resort that combines mountain (Kissavos) and sea, while near it is the Delta of the river Pinios. In its place was the ancient city of Evrymenes.

At a glance

Stomio due to the rich sand and shallow beach is an ideal place for family vacations. A trademark of Stomio is the lighthouse on the beach near the port. Every summer there are various cultural events, culminating in the Feast of the Sea (with the feast of sardines), which gathers a large number of people from different regions. Besides, Stomio is famous as one of the largest fishing sites. There is also a festival in the monastery on the 15th of August, on the feast of the Virgin Mary.

Stomio used to be called Tsagezi. This name comes from the Turkish language (from the words Çay ağzı teaspoon) which means "the mouth of the river" (estuary). However, the current name has the same origin due to the estuary (river mouth) of the Pinios river. The Pinios Delta near Stomio is a protected wetland of the European Ecological Network Natura 2000. Stomio is mentioned as the northernmost port of the Greek state from the integration of Thessaly in 1881 until the integration of Macedonia in 1912.

Komnini Monastery
Komnini Monastery
  •   Komnini Monastery. The Holy Monastery of Komnini is a Byzantine monastery in Kissavos, near the town of Stomio in Larissa. It was founded by the emperor Alexios I Komnenos and its full name is Komninios Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary & Agios Dimitrios (Panagia of Komnenio or Economics). The monastery of Panagia Oikonomio, also known as the Monastery of Agios Dimitrios, is located on the eastern wooded side of Ossa between the towns of Stomi and Karytsa. As evidenced by the existing archaeological remains, in the place of the monastery pre-existed an ancient pagan temple dedicated to an unknown deity. According to the case of Z. Esfigmenitis and N. Georgiadis, the ancient sanctuary belonged to Poseidon Petraion, who was honored and celebrated by the Thessalians in memory of the great earthquake that separated Ossa from Olympus, a work attributed to Poseidon. In the same place of the ancient sanctuary it was built during the 14th and 5th centuries AD. century a Byzantine church. The French traveler Mezier when he visited the monastery in 1852 was informed by the elder abbot of the monastery that according to tradition, the monastery was founded during the reign of Justinian (527-556 AD). The same information was given by the abbot Zacharias who lived there for more than 54 years and to the Russian archimandrite Porfiros Uspensky who visited the monastery in 1859. The information may be true. However, the monastery has long been called Komnineion, an indication according to Bishop Platamonas Ambrosios, that it is "an institution of the Royal Family of Komnenos". The Komnenian church was of wide dimensions (26 * 16m.) Of the triangular cruciform type, with four chapels in the four corners that were architecturally connected with the whole building. Both the architectural type of the four chapels and the exterior diligent masonry, consisting of bricks and carved stones placed alternately in the zones, are a rare case of high architectural construction. The monastery was destroyed during the Turkish occupation and especially during the years of the revolution of 1821. Other, even worse things happened in 1868, when it was set on fire by the insane abbot of the monastery and all its real estate and movable property were confiscated. Then the last valuable relics were lost and the archive and the rich library were destroyed. Some of these rare manuscripts were sold cheaply to gyrologists and archaeologists, such as the French Maiziere and are now in the National Library of Paris. Now, next to the site of the ancient monastery, a new majestic monastery has been erected, an institution of the last 15 years. Anyone who wants to admire the beauty of the landscape and to praise the worthiness of the hardworking hands of the 10 God-fearing monks who alone erected the prestigious building, can only visit this sacred and historic site.
