- Phaistos, ☎ 30 28920 42315. 08:30-15:00. Phaistos was the second most important city of Crete during the second millennium BC, after Knossos, and is today an important archaeological site. In Phaistos the Minoan era begins in 2,600 BC. The first palace was located on the west side of the archeological site, it was built in 2,000 BC. on successive levels and its walls were built of mudstone. The palace was destroyed by an earthquake in 1730 BC, as was Knossos. A palace was built on the site of the ruins, more majestic than the first. The new palace was built on top of the ruins of the first, it had a similar design with the only difference being its slightly elevated level, due to the existence of the ruins. The central courtyard of the palaces had similar dimensions to the courtyards of Knossos and Malia and may have been used for worship ceremonies such as the Bullfighting. The importance of the palace of Phaistos lies in the fact that it provides excellent stratigraphy but also information about the relationship between the first and the second palace and the two different phases of the Minoan civilization in general.
