area
In terms of administrative divisions, Yunnan is divided into 16 prefecture-level divisions, some of which are ethnic autonomous prefectures, such as Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. For travelers, Yunnan can be divided into 7 parts:
Kunming City The capital and political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan Province. |
Central Yunnan(Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture、Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture) To the west of Kunming, the terrain began to become more rugged. This is a very popular area, especially for backpackers. |
East yunnan(Zhaotong City、Qujing、Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture) The surrounding rolling hills extending from Guizhou and Guangxi have a panoramic view. This is a high-altitude hilly plateau in Yunnan. This area includes many tourist attractions that backpackers don't often visit. |
Southeast Yunnan(Yuxi City、Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture) What’s amazing is that in one day, you can walk through arid wastelands, lush pine forests, barren mountains and tropical rain forests. The cities in this area of Yunnan are very compact, and it is easy to travel from one city to another for sightseeing. |
Southern Yunnan(Pu'er City、Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture) Geographically and ethnically close to Southeast Asia, the jungle covers most of the terrain. This may be the best place to avoid winter in China. |
West Yunnan(Baoshan、Lincang、Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture、Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture) The terrain here is rugged and uneven. There used to be the famous Myanmar-Burma Highway. Now it is one of the most attractive destinations in China. |
Northwest Yunnan(Lijiang City、Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture) "Ancient Tibet" in Yunnan Province. Many tourists come here to experience Tibet, and they can also follow the road to western Sichuan. Here you will find towering mountains and fascinating regional culture. |

Since then, passenger traffic on the Chinese section of this railway line has ceased, but in December 2014, a new parallel railway line was opened. Now you can take a bus or train from Kunming to Hekou (to Hekou North Station), then from Hekou to Lao Cai, and then take a train to Hanoi.
