Kaliningrad Oblast was founded in 1945. Kaliningrad was originally called Königsberg. It was established around the 13th century. With the rise of the Hanseatic League of German merchants, Königsberg also prospered. At the end of the 15th century, Königsberg had more than 100 merchant ships, and Königsberg was controlled by Prussia before 1660. In 1701, the first king of Prussia, Frederick I, was crowned here in the cathedral, and Königsberg was designated the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia. During the Königsberg period, it became the center of Prussia and Russia's trade and remained the capital of Prussia until Prussia moved its capital to Berlin. Königsberg is a well-known education center. Albertina University was established in 1544. The most famous scholar of this university is the philosopher Kant, and most of his ideas were formed here.

Königsberg experienced great changes in the 20th century. Germany was defeated in World War I. The victorious country decided to draw up a "Polish Corridor" so that Poland could connect the coastal areas, but this separated Königsberg and East Prussia from the German mainland.

After the Second World War, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom decided at the Potsdam Conference to abolish East Prussia, and its northern part was put under the Soviet Union after the Second World War and became its own.

On April 7, 1946, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union passed the order to establish the Königsberg Region of the Russian Federation. On July 4, the administrative center was named after Kaliningrad, one of the chairman of the Soviet presidium, and was changed to Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg was founded in 1255), and the state was named Kaliningrad Oblast. Since then, there have been no Germans in Kaliningrad. Some died in the war, some fled, and the rest were exiled by the Soviet Union to East Germany or Siberia.

Because German-speaking residents were forced to leave and all their properties were confiscated, most of the residents of Kaliningrad Region now speak Russian, but there are still many traces of ancient German culture (for example, every city in the state has It has a real German name), and the existence of modern Russian culture makes it an interesting destination for travelers.

Kaliningrad Oblast produces 90% of the world's amber.

car

The road system in the Kaliningrad region is very extensive; however, the quality of the roads is not always well maintained, and sometimes signs are difficult to find because there are no signs indicating directions/destinations (especially in cities). The driving rules are basically the same as those in most European countries, but many local drivers do not follow the rules, especially during rush hours in cities. Pay attention to the local traffic police, because they like to block tourists from foreign countries and often want to ask for some fees.
