Kandahar(Pashto/Persian: قندهار), Afghanistan’s second largest city, located in the south of the country, is the economic, cultural, and transportation center of southern Afghanistan, as well as the central city where Pashtun people live.
Kandahar was founded in the 4th century BC, and for a long time it was a military center for the Persian and Indian dynasties. In 1747, Ahmed Shah Durrani reigned here and established the Kingdom of Afghanistan with Kandahar as its capital. Although the capital of Afghanistan quickly moved to Kabul, Kandahar's status as the center of southern Afghanistan has not been shaken ever since.
In 1995, the Taliban suddenly emerged from Kandahar and almost unified Afghanistan. The current Afghan President Karzai is also a family of tribal leaders from Kandahar.
