history
From the 15th century, Portuguese, British, French and other colonists invaded the coast to trade slaves, called the "Slave Coast". After World War I, the eastern and western parts became the mandates of Britain and France; after World War II, it became the trusteeship. France was authorized by the United Nations to trust French Togoland, including Ghana. When he refused to join the Togolese army by 626 French veterans of Togolese nationality who had mostly participated in the wars in Indochina and Algeria, he was overthrown by those soldiers in a coup d’état launched on January 13, 1963. But just four years later, another armed coup took place, and Grunizic fled Togo and died in a car accident in Côte d’Ivoire. One of the veterans who initiated the 1963 coup, Nassingbe Eyadema (1937-2005), became president in 1967 until his death in 2005. He was almost defeated by Gilchrist Olympio, the son of Silfanas Olympio, in the 1998 election. In 2003, after the constitutional restriction on the number of re-elections of the president was lifted, Eyadema was re-elected as president. According to Eyadema’s death announcement, his son Faure Nassingbe was designated by the army as the head of state. The African Union described this takeover as an armed coup.
On April 24, 2005, the Togo presidential election was held. On April 26, the Independent Electoral Commission announced the victory of the candidate of the Togolese People’s Union, Faure Nassingbe.
