In June 1946, Suqian County (including Yundong and Yunxi), the area south of Xinyi River in Tongsu North County, merged into Suqian County and belonged to Huaiyin Prefecture. It belongs to the Huaiyin area in 1970. It belongs to Huaiyin City in 1983. On December 31, 1987, with the approval of the State Council, Suqian County was abolished and Suqian City was established at the county level. Approved by the State Council in July 1996, the county-level city of Suqian was revoked and the prefecture-level city of Suqian was established, governing four counties: Shuyang, Siyang, Sihong, Suyu, and Sucheng District. The seat of the municipal government is Sucheng District. In March 2004, with the approval of the State Council, the establishment of Suyu District in Suyu County was revoked.
