Kaiyuan City used to be the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway Hub Station, but the external railway passenger transport was suspended in 2003. At present, Kaiyuan Station only has city tourist trains. The quasi-gauge railway in Kaiyuan City is under construction and is expected to open to traffic no earlier than 2021.

The Kaiyuan section of the narrow-gauge Yunnan-Vietnam Railway was opened in 2018. Kaiyuan City's North-South Rail Transit Bus Trains will run 3 pairs of trains every day from October 8th to March 31st of the following year, from April 1st to October 7th every year. There are 4 pairs of trains every day, the highest fare is 10 yuan, Kaiyuan Station, Xiangyun Road Station, Lujianghe Station, 1909 Square Station, Qikongqiao Station, Nandong Station, and Data Station are set up midway.
